Coldtainer and University of Brescia for the environmental sustainability of refrigerated transport

The collaboration between Coldtainer and the University of Brescia continues in the name of research on the environmental sustainability of refrigerated transport. A recent report by the International Energy Association highlighted that the transport sector represents approximately 26% of total energy consumption. Furthermore, temperature-controlled transportation generates more emissions than room temperature transportation due to additional fuel requirements for cooling and refrigerant losses.

Mechanical Engineering of the University of Brescia carried out a study in 2019 with the aim of comparing two logistics systems on an economic and environmental level; on one hand the traditional transport (refrigerated vans) and on the other the transport with portable refrigerating units (Coldtainer), through 2 tests, one of long distance delivery with opening at the beginning and end of the test and one of multiple delivery with openings every 5 km. The results were surprising especially in terms of Co2 emissions, with almost a 40% reduction in favor of portable refrigeration units. Today, in agreement with Coldtainer, the University of Brescia updated the data based on the general growth in fuel prices and other variables. The complete report can be consulted and downloaded on the eco-sustainability page of the Coldtainer website.
